Chicken Coop Construction Process
Between August and September 2020, we embarked on a collaborative project, utilizing recycled materials sourced from the Big Chimney Factory and the local community. Working together with community college students and volunteers, we constructed a chicken coop. Through an environmental and climate analysis of the site, we identified a small open space behind the original family home as the ideal location for the coop. This placement not only allowed for residents of the community to engage in close interaction with the chickens but also fostered cooperation between neighboring campus teachers and students. This initiative aimed to integrate daily life with the practice of Permaculture through the shared experience of raising chickens.
Upon surveying the space near the Sixth Fuel Big Chimney Factory, we selected a small open area situated between the factory and one of the Military dependents’ Houses as the site for the “community chicken coop.” Additionally, we repurposed the indoor space as a community kitchen, serving as a gathering point for cooking and shared meals. The materials used in constructing the chicken coop were primarily obtained from recycled resources discarded by the surrounding communities and abandoned materials from renovation projects at the Big Chimney Building. These available resources, once considered waste, were collected and stored as a material warehouse for future construction endeavors. The team only incurred expenses for materials that were not readily obtainable through recycling.
